Training using the Waterhole Rituals 1

Hello again. I recently had a letter from Helene in New York who was telling me about her attempts to get to know a large German warm blood that was recently bought by her barn owner. Helene freely admits she is only a novice horse rider and has no horse of her own but she wanted my feedback on her attempts to use the Waterhole Rituals with this powerful horse. My reply to her was quite lengthy but I believe very useful for a lot of other people looking to start using my Method. I am therefore going to share my reply to Helene with you today and on Friday. So let’s get started….

Hi Helene

We are kindred spirits and I am happy you enjoyed reading my book and blog. My advice is to stop your work with Max. I can see from your letter that you have a lot of talent for creative exploration and I would venture to say that you will be able to develop your skill with horses easily, however, you need more knowledge and horsemanship skill before you try to implement my Methods with Max.

Try something simple

Hi. This is another story I want to share with you that I just thought about as I was working on my computer. It was again during my first job in La Jolla, California, which I told you about in blog post My first job.

As you may recall, I was hired to handle a large training center of hunters and jumpers. What they like to do in some of these training centers is to play a little joke on you on the first day that you arrive. It’s a way of breaking ice and getting to know you a bit better through laughing together. This is really important when somebody is hired to be the leader and I was hired to manage the whole ranch, so I had several trainers under my care plus many, many horses in training.

New foal problems

Hi. Before we get on to today´s blog post, I just wanted to say “thank you” to all the people who have been posting comments on my blog. Because of my work with horses, community is something that is very important to me and so to see our little community here growing is wonderful. I will endeavour to get back to you on any questions that are raised as we go along.

Right, today´s blog post is a question concerning how to handle a new foal and comes from Nancy who writes:

Hi Carolyn

I have your DVD on the Waterhole Rituals. I wondered if you could give me some tips on how to handle a new foal. We have a one week old foal who is so cute but he is already charging us, then turning and kicking out towards us and he is trying to nip. He is quite a handful. We aren’t sure what to do so he trusts us and wants to approach us but stop the inappropriate and potentially dangerous behavior. Also, is there anything you recommend teaching young foals?

Lizards and learning

Hello again. As you know, I study all sorts of animals, not just horses, to see what I can learn from them and in fact have done so all my life. Here is another of my lizard stories…

This story concerns the perception people have of animals. Lot of times people feel that animals really do not have a lot going on upstairs that they work basically from instinct and I want to tell a story that would express how complicated an animal’s mind can be.

One day, I was looking out over some grass and I noticed a lizard. This lizard was acting like he had may be some physical thing wrong with him. He was slashing around in the grass as if he was dying. Flashing his tail and throwing his head around and going round and round in circles and I thought that he was going to die.

Horse training takes time… or does it?

Hello, hope you had a good weekend. Well, I have just got back in today from training a horse by the name of Marchadero (not Panadero – see comment 6 below). I was thinking about him after our session and I could not believe how far we have come together.

It has been so exciting working with him through the Waterhole Rituals. Today, we were working on the last Ritual, which is Go Trot and Come Up. What you want here is that you send your horse off and he runs away at top speed and then you call him back and he turns around and runs back as fast as he left. This is what I got today with Marchador. It was absolutely brilliant. He did it three times straight on his own. I did not ask for a fourth time. I was thrilled where his at this time in his life and the training he has done so far.

Welsh Cob mare

Last week I gave a lesson to a student of mine, Stephanie, who has a Welsh Cob mare that she has been driving and riding. The horse is very fearful like the red horse that I have been telling you about and so she had started doing the Uberstreichen Exercises and working on getting her comfortable in her territory just as I have previously mentioned.

The problem I noticed with this mare though was that she getting good with the Waterhole Rituals but still, when she was brought to the barn, she did not want to have the bridle put on her. She was acting sort of wild and frightened and so I asked how long this had been going on. Stephanie said it had been like this for a long time and so I told her that we had to get the horse comfortable being present right there and right then and to get her to agree to the fact that she likes being at the barn before we even attempt to put on the bridle.

Horse photo´s 2

Hello. First let me apologise for the lack of blog post yesterday. My tech guy said he had done it but had forgotten to hit the “go” button. I told him it must have been too much sun or Sangria or both! He assured me it wasn´t it and asked me to pass on his apologies too! Anyway, here is yesterday´s blog post…

Since our last publication of your photo´s, we´ve received a bunch more, so thought it would be nice to share these around too.

I love to see the expressions on the faces of their horses as well as study their body language and energy. Hope you do too.
