The Carolyn Resnick Method

Hi. I was asked the other day if I could sum up what my Method, DVDs and courses are all about and what makes me different to other horse trainers. So I sat down and tried to condense my philosophy into a few sentences, which wasn’t so easy! Anyway, please find below what I wrote, I hope it resonates with you.

Before we get to that though, I have a small survey it would be great if you could complete so as to give us some feedback. It’s very easy, just check one of the choices and click vote. Thank you.

Talking horses again

Hello again. Today we are talking horses again or rather I was talking horses just last month on a radio show and I wanted to play you some of that today.

You may remember a post from a few months back with a clip from the online radio show Animal Talk Naturally, on which I had appeared. Dr. Kim Bloomer, one of the hosts, was kind enough to add a comment then to say I would be appearing again which I did last month and below is an excerpt from that show.

Fearful and aggresive horse

Hi again. Today’s post is another question, which I think many of you might find interesting and valuable. It concerns an arab mare that is alternately fearful and aggressive and is generally uneasy around other horses. Tami writes:

Hello

I have really enjoyed reading through your posts about making learning fun for horses. I took your quiz and the question on keeping her attention no matter what stood out to me. I wonder if you have any techniques or any reading material you would recommend for this issue:

I have a lovely 17 year old arab mare who I acquired as a green-broke 10 year old and have spent lots of time working with over the last 7 years. She is very bonded to me and when I moved the east coast and then up to Canada from San Diego a few years ago she came with me. She lived most of her life very happily on a farm where each horse stayed in an individual paddock and only socialized over fences.

Speaking to your horse

Hello. Today I would like to share with you my thoughts on talking to your horse. I have always talked to my horses ever since I was a little girl and I’ve found it to be very valuable.

Today’s story tells of when I first realized a horse really can understand almost anything we say to him. Years ago, I let my horse Stoney out of his stall to be free at liberty. He ran over to the apple tree looking for apples but of course there weren’t any because it was the right time of year. So I said to him, “Stoney, there are no apples on that tree, it’s the wrong season but there are some apples in the house in the refrigerator.”

Before you ride

I have spoken before about preparation before you ride but I was recently asked a question about letting other people ride your horse and wanted to make sure I had explained it clearly.

Do not let anyone ride your horse unless you believe they have the skill to get along with him or can put more training on him for you. Horses can be offended and lose their training by having a stranger on their backs. Most people have few or no skills in making a connection with a strange horse for the first time. On the other hand, I have watched people get on horses and need no time at all to find out how a horse needs to be ridden.

Training your horse using routine

Hello. Today’s story is about a horse named, Serpico. Now, Serpico was an Arabian gelding that I purchased at auction and he was just an absolutely beautiful Arabian. He was 16 hands, black liver chestnut, just gorgeous and we actually got him for very little money.

This didn’t make sense because he was such a nice horse but after we got him home, we started to get calls saying, “How is Serpico and are you okay?” And I would say, “Ooh, he’s doing wonderfully and is such a great horse.” But we got more and more calls asking about Serpico, so I asked one of the callers why they were asking.
