Training your horse

This morning I started thinking about what causes people to abuse horses when the horse doesn’t perform for them exactly like they would like or what causes somebody to overlook the responsibility of continuing to train their horse.
I came to the conclusion that the person really does not enjoy the process of training. They don’t realize that training itself can be such a pleasure.
I think of it like opening up a package because we are really excited about just finding out what’s inside. That is what makes training so that it is not abusive because we really don’t expect any bottom line on it. We are just happy with whatever results we get.

Unfortunately, I do think some people are stuck in the emotional habits of childhood. If they reacted to things they could not control with anger and frustration instead of wondering how to fit into the situation, that comes out when they cannot control the horse.
I tell people that there are no deadlines when I train my horses. It’s amazing how often they look at me like I’m crazy. I think you’re absolutely right about training. Every moment that I’m with my horses, there’s something being learned by each of us. It’s a journey without an end.
