I sincerely hope you enjoy reading my blog and that the lessons are of practical use to you. If you have faced similar challenges and found my advice useful, then do please share your story with us, we’d love to hear it.
This question comes from Victoria, who is a regular contributor and has her own blog here.

Hey Carolyn;
I have the same problem with my two horses. I can ride Star away from matty, but she runs the fence and gets out of control. I even had her kick the gate. She is 15 now and this is not the behaviour I expect she also steals food and pushes star around.(he is the gelding.) I can put halters on them with ease and fly masks. Star is really good he can be spirited. Matty can be a handful. I do ground work occassional. I guess I need more I don’t want to get hurt or have anyone else get hurt. I graze them in my backyard almost daily with halters and lead ropes. I do not have a round pen.
Thank you, Carolyn – I’ve been doing what you suggested, and both horses seem to be fine with short separations. Silk will still call to Siete if I take her out of Silk’s sight for long. Siete doesn’t seem to care if I leave her alone and go off with Silk. I think you’re right about creating a daily routine that they can adjust to as a way of easing into longer times when they are apart. You emphasize making it fun, and that’s really helpful to me. I would get nervous and agitated about the separation when the horses were upset. Now that I’m cheerful and making it more of a game, they don’t feel my stress.
