“Conventional” horse handling
May 23rd, 2008 by Carolyn Resnick Method
Hello again. I try to reply to comments people make on my blog whenever I can but I thought I should reply to one I received this week in an actual post.
It was a lovely letter from a lady called Ellen and it brightened my day to hear how my work has such a strong and positive impact on people. I also hope that it will bring a sense of hope and direction to those out there who feel in their heart that there is a gentler and more natural way to be with horses but are struggling to find it. If you persevere and follow your heart and instincts, as Ellen did, then you will find the path that is right for you.

Dear Sheryl and Liz,
I would enthusiastically suggest you get Carolyn’s DVD’s and her book “Naked Liberty”. Read, view them all and you’ll get a much better idea of how to work with your horses from an intuitive, connected point of view. As an Animal Intuitive, I would also suggest you do a bit of research about Animal Communication in order to understand how natural it is to use Annimal Communication to understand your horses better. Carolyn’s methods inspire this intuitive approach as well as teach you practical techniques for doing exercies and activities that can enhance your relationship with your horses.
I empathize with your feelings and your desires to have a special relationship with your horses. You can do it! Please believe that they (your horses) want more than anything to feel a sense of purpose and connection with you. As domesticated animals who do not have the freedom of being in a wild herd, their strong focus is to be with you in harmony and joy. Since you are their human, it is up to you to shape a life for them that allows your equine/human partnership to flourish. Whether you want to ride them, or have them as a companion, it all starts with the connection. I have learned from Carolyn that if you take the time to establish that bond, you will then have a powerful, spiritual partnership that is fulfilling for both you and your horse. From there, anything is possible!
Sincerely,
Debra
I too am now fifty. I have had my horses over ten years now. My mare is buddy sour. When I took both of them out last year so she would not get so upset we had a mishap and I fell off my gelding and she stepped on my upper thigh. I do not want to put myself in any danger so I do not pony her anymore. I have taken my gelding out a few times. I guess I just do not want to get hurt. I love my horses and I want to ride more. Please help

Dear Carolyn,
I could not have expressed it as well as you did.
You have definitely brought a “sense of hope and direction to those out there who feel in their heart that there is a gentler and more natural way to be with horses but are struggling to find it.”
Another one of those out there is ME. I am 50 something and was fortunate enough to have horses growing up. I rode in Colorado where the horses were all free on a few hundred acres but stayed near the ranch to get their hay twice a day- a river ran through the place ect. Who knew that was unusual? I took a twenty-five year break from having a horse of my own and riding regularly to raise a family.
My connection to horses continued with my art and writing. I decided a year ago that I could not live without a horse any longer. I found a nicely put together mare that the seller said she had done quite a bit of Parelli work with but that she had not ridden the horse with any contact yet. I did not know what “Parelli” was… Turns out the horse was highly sensitive to the touch-hated being brushed and petted and really aloof. She wanted nothing to do with me.. I had never had a horse be like that with me. She went out on a ride willingly but when you turned her toward home she got explosive. I tried a few things including getting off and walking her home. I felt in more danger on the ground. I knew I needed help but had no clue where to go. The cutting horse trainer could get on her and put her past anything, but it made no change in her when I got on. The European dressage trainer jerked on her mouth and forced her between his legs and hands and left her foaming. My horse looked terrified. I could not stand it so I pulled her out of that situation The local “natural” dressage trainer, tried this and that but had no method to her maddness and seemed pretty confused which in turn confused my mare, Then a terrible thing happened. My horse sustained a severe injury at a boarding stable in Agoura Hills near Malibu. She was hospitalized and confined for a month. I visited her and gave her carrots every day. Then I took her to a friend’s ranch. Her rehab over the next two months required hand walking for 20 minutes twice a day. Long story short, good from the bad- We are now firmly bonded. This week (three months later) I turned her out in a large arena to roll. Much to my surprise he follows right next to me at all gaits, and stops on a dime-no lead rope. When I clucked at her to get her to trot around the arena, she just went around me in large circle as if she was on a lunge line, and changes direction by voice too. I am wondering what else she knows.
I don’t mind if I never ride her again. I think we have a relationship now we both can enjoy. I had not thought about working with her in this way. Now I want to learn more about liberty training. I found your website and I am fasciated. I am not sure where your materials start. What book is your first written material and what DVD teaches the basics? Any suggestions?
Hello Carolyn, Ellen and Debra,
I am glad I am not the only one in this. I was around horses for several year around the age of ten, mostly being with horses, not riding. Just observing, helping in the stables and enjoying just being with one mare, who like me had health problems, so she was not ridden. When she suddenly died I stopped going there. Apart from the broken heart, the “being” with horses was not on the menu in that stable. I always loved horses but for years I stayed away, thinking perhaps I don´t have the right “skills” or attitude because I could not see myself do what “conventional” riding schools do. I started riding again when my children wanted to try horse riding. I looked into it and after extensive search on internet and in books I found Carolyn who says: be with your horse and use your intuition , make a bond then the horse will know what you thinking….. (Carolyn is the only one who I truly resonate with and all makes perfect and simple sense. )
I had these “strange” experiences with that horse long time ago, she seemed to know what i was thinking…I read and saw all available by Carolyn and got the idea that I am not totally off my rocket….because I seem to be the only one in the riding hall who talks a lot with the horse and who does not want to make him do things because someone said so. Which brings me to a challenging situation. I do not have my own horse to work and be with the way I wish to be. To enjoy the work and play and be and have fun. But I cannot quite enjoy riding on a horse that does not enjoy it – she does things because she was asked to. But horses I ride in the stables are not mine and I can´t just take her out for a walk or take her to the meadow and read my book. I cannot afford and support a horse right now, yet I would want to work in Liberty and I feel a bit impatient (but there is no point starting a relationship with a horse not knowing if I can keep him and keep him well) because I am thinking I am already thirty eight and don´t have much experience just my heart and my intuition…. Reading Ellen´s and Debra´s letter/comment as well as Carolyn´s support on this great blog is very encouraging for me, and helps while waiting for my horse. Thank you all and wish you wonderful days with your horse friends.
Hana
Dear Carolyn,
I recently discovered your methods and your heartfelt desire to teach higher awareness about horses and all animals. Words cannot describe how grateful I am to have met you!
I’d like to respond to Ellen’s recent blog and your response to her. As an Animal Intuitive and Animal Artist, I have had similar challenges as Ellen in discovering a more humane, respectful way of being with horses. I rediscovered the equine world at the age of 56, my first exposure to horses being when I was a teenager. During the last two years, I have searched for methods that could help me establish the natural connection with my horse that I know in my heart exists, but which the traditional world of horse training has not offered.
By following the suggestions in your DVD’s, your book and your blog, I am reminded to trust the voice that has been within me and within my horsethat all along! I believe your methods celebrate the natural, intuitive connection that all animals wish to have with us. When I work with my horse Romeo and practice the art of feeling and shaping the energy between us, he and I perform the dance of connection! Our relationship has improved 100-fold since practicing your methods and I finally feel that the horse I knew always existed within Romeo is now being allowed to blossom.
Thank you for your continued efforts in helping humans to discover the joy of equine/human partnership at it’s most spiritually advanced level!
Sincerley,
Debra
