Dear Carolyn:
Thank you again for your blog. It has so inspired me and I read something on your blog every morning to get me started for my day with my horse (Key Largo). I have written a couple emails to you and on your blog about my problems I'm having with her. You have not answered me directly but in my attempt to find some kind of answer from your blog, the answers came from within.
Yesterday I stopped the treats and decided I need to start over with what I know about the waterhole rituals (though it isn't much). I just sat with her and watched her every move (studied). She tried everything she could think of to get her normal ration of treats, so I started the first lesson of the UE, head down. She was not very responsive at first and did walk off, but stopped turned around and just starred at me. I went to her and asked her to come back and she did so I tried again and she was more receptive.
When she could finally hold her head for the count of 7, I praised her and rubbed her neck. We did it one more time and I gave her a treat. I wasn't going to give a treat but the look in her eyes was more than I could bear.
She took her treats and walked off to go eat her hay so I let her.
We are still having space issues but we worked on that too. When she comes looking for treats she pushes me with her head, tries to bite me and stands over top of me while I am sitting in the chair, but every time I just sent her off. She would just look at me as if I had lost my mind, and just stand there and pout. Then she would laugh at me and walk away.
Last night I could tell she was very angry with me, but I decided to walk beside her everywhere she went. When she walked I walked, when she stopped, I stopped and she would just look at me as if to say "What are you doing?" She would nibble on the grass and I would just stand there and wait. Well needless to say she become very bothered by my presence and would try to run so I ran beside her. So she attempted to kick up her hind legs and squeel so I acted like I did that too and squeeled and when she stopped to look at me as if I had lost my mind I walked up to her and pet her neck and told her what a good girl she was. We did this about 2 or 3 more times. Then she stopped, looked at me and decided she didn't want to do that anymore and asked me to play ball. We had such a great time without the treats. We played for over an hour. It was awesome! I couldn't have done it without your blog and your inspiration.
I also read the one on "failure and success" and I came to the realization if one way don't work try another until you find the one that works.
I wish I could afford your books and DVDs, but due to the economy I am just lucky to afford to keep my horse. Please don't give up on your blog. I am sure there are many people out here that enjoy your blog as much as I do who are in the same boat as I am. Keep them coming and I can't thank you enough.

Paul Belasik is a great author and teacher. I have read and cherished Songs of the horses and Riding towards the light. I have also had the privelege to ride with him in his intensive private school. An experience I will always hold on to and hope to do again sometime.

Hi Carolyn,
thank you for the helpful information.

My Percheron, Miracle, and I had a fun filled day yesturday....
We are doing pretty well together with the WHR, so yesturday, I thought we would do something different---so I attempted to 'feel' what she would like to do.
She felt like she wanted me to ride her---don't know how to describe that feeling. But we went to the mounting block and she politely stood there while I slid onto her back. Often times, she moves around...but since doing the rituals, she is now standing.
I then let her decide where we went and how, around the arena...she seemed to really enjoy herself---ears were forward, and she felt bright and forward moving...all we did was walk, she took me around in zigzag patterns and on occaision I asked her to go this way or that and then let her decide.
We then did some companion walking.

After awhile, it felt like she wanted to go to the round pen. So we went there and that is where the fun really began...I was on the ground this time...and we played fast and slow trot and canter, trot, slow and halt.
I thought this might be a good opportunity for me to run along side her, so she would be used to it when we graduate to the real dance.
She responded very well and seemed to love it..I would run or trot with her, slow and fast..it was an awsome feeling---heh--and a good workout.
It was definitely fun for both of us.

Now with the additional information you have provided above, I look forward to more fun with her....it's exciting.

I wish I could provide video...I am always alone with her...did try to video by using a tripod and just letting it roll...but we always went off screen...I will figure something out though.

Thank you again for opening that gate further in our relationships with our horses.

Hi Carolyn,

Well I'm still awaiting the DVD on the WR, so I'm a little uncertain if we match the intention of the ritual, but Capricho is "sending away" when I ask him, and turns back and faces me. This is helpful to hear that I ought to pursue him a bit for impulsion's sake, not that he's a poor doer by any means.

Carolyn, I look at that young horse standing happily in his paddock, always with an open face, lips working, ears forward and happy, and I can't thank you enough. I imagine that even if I couldn't ride him (no reason why not, except that I'm giving him time to grow), I would still love having him for his personality and the rapport. Sometimes he wants a horse hug, and will just press into me and melt for minutes on end.

Muchos saludos, Jo. Sometime we've gotta talk, I think we're about the same age and emerging from the same background with horses.
