<title>Carolyn Resnick's Horsemanship Blog - Horse Training from the Ground Up (pdf)</title>
</image>
<itunes:summary>Carolyn Resnick has spent her whole life with horses and as a child was known as The Girl who Talks with Horses. At around the age of 10, she spent 3 successive summers integrating herself into a herd of wild horses. By learning their rules of society, their language and their rituals, she worked her way into the herd and then ascended its pecking order. This culminated in her being allowed to ride the lead mare of the herd, bareback and completely without tack.
The training method she has developed is based on her experiences then and since and is known as the Waterhole Rituals. By taking the time to properly develop a full connection and partnership with your horse, you will significantly shorten any other subsequent form of equine training you undertake together.

There as been several people a bit confused in how to communicate the fifth Ritual Eye Contact with their horse.
It is quite easy to put it into practice.
I thought I would break it down for those of you that would like more information.
What you are wanting to do is to develop your horse to have a habit of keeping an eye on you, not as a horse would on a predator but like you would do with a friend at a gathering of many people, where if you did not keep and eye on each other you could get separated.

The way you approach this ritual is the same way lead horses teach the younger ones to stay alert to knowing were the lead horses are.
I have found the best approach for training a horse is to train them in the same way horses train horses to help keep the unity of the herd and how they go about developing their courtships. Approaching your horse in this manner he will learn very quickly. This Ritual will help to prepare him for other training methods by developing his ability to relate to humans.
Practicing the fifth Ritual Eye Contact with your horse, you will develop him to keep an eye on you so you can direct him at liberty, and he will not miss your signals.

The first goal in the Eye Contact Ritual is to get your horse’s eye to track you when you begin to circle around to his backend to move him off his food. You wait until your horse is not looking at you to start your circle. At some point as you are slowly circling around to he back end he will look in you direction, when he does, return to your original spot faster than you departed, so he can see that when he decided to look, he stopped your advances.
When you feel your horse has returned to his original composure and relaxation you start again with the same pattern of circling around him when he is not looking at you. In a short time, your horse will figure out that he is controlling your ability to move him off his food by keeping a eye on you. When your horse understands his power to control your advances, he will enjoy this ability and increase his desire to stay focused on you. You, in return, develop a strong line of communication with him from his growing ability to stay focused on you.

The next stage of Eye Contact Ritual, when you circle around you horse to move him off his food, you continue to move around him until he or she will turn his neck to keep and eye on you. You do this by getting around to his back end, and he must bend his neck to see where you went. You no longer accept just the eyes tracking you, now you want the neck to bend in your direction.
After the horse learns this, you then take it to the next stage, where the horse will shift his hindquarters to keep and eye on you. Instead of coming right back to the front of your horse you keep circling to his rear until you get your horse too shift his hindquarters, it is very helpful to use a cluck at this time. When the horse learns when to look and when to bend his head, or shift his hindquarters, he becomes more confident and you will have light aids when you ask for a pirouette on the forehand.

Tip: When you get to the last stage of the ritual, alternate between keeping an eye on your horse’s eye and on his hindquarters as a way to influence your horse’s movements.
Any time I look at the hindquarters of a horse and cluck my horse will make a turn in my direction and shift his hindquarters away. This replaces a need to touch your horse to get him to shift his hindquarters. You will not have any reason to use more pressure [...]</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Hello. As you may know, I have a very close and long-standing relationship with Neda De Mayo, who does wonderful work at her American Wild Horse Sanctuary, Return to Freedom, in Lompoc, California.

Neda has been a long time student of mine and has introduced a number of people to my Method during her workshops. As were putting together today’s blog, we came across a very interesting question from the Insider Circle which I wanted to feature. As you will read, this person was indeed introduced to my work via Neda and Mark told me that he was on the same workshop and that’s how he found out about me too! So I’d like to thank Neda and say that if you ever get chance to visit the sanctuary, I really recommend it. They run a variety of different events and workshops there too and of course it’s a wonderful cause to support too.
In fact, large parts of my Waterhole Reflections DVD were shot at the ranch and it really is beautiful up there, especially in the Spring when all the flowers are out, so go take a visit.
OK, so on to the question, which comes from Stephanie, who writes:
While participating in a clinic at Return To Freedom with Neda De Mayo (2007, I believe) I was introduced to your way of being with horses and have been practicing ever since. HUGE breath of fresh air! I have no words to describe the gratitude I feel.
My questions are:
1. Horse pins ears when walking toward food, with or without me walking with him. What does this mean and how would you shape his behavior, or does it matter?
2. Sour expression, pinning ears while companion walking. What does this mean and how would you shape his behavior, or does it matter?
3. Head slinging when sending away quickly. What does this mean and how would you shape his behavior, or does it matter?
4. What are your insights on mutual grooming as a herd behavior? Does it matter who initiates it? Who usually initiates it, lead, dominant or lower in the order? Is this a ritual that can be used to strengthen the bond and shape behavior? How do you use it?
Thanks so much for your reply!
I look forward to coming to CA to study with you in person when the time is right.
And here what I write in reply:
1. Sometimes horses cannot be broken out of habit. What you have described may be the situation here, because she puts her ears back when she is approaching food even when no one is around her. The Kemosabe Arabian line will behave exactly as you have described and you cannot get it out of them. The horse doesn’t necessarily have any ill intentions from the ears being back, it’s just the way they are. They connect and love as well as the next horse.
The other thing to consider is that when horses are in a herd and are traveling together very close, it is natural for them to connect to the horses that get too close by laying their ears back, even when the horse next to them isn’t disturbing them or too close at all. It’s a game they seem to participate in. Having said all that though, I still spend the time it takes to try and train this behavior out if I can. I find that it’s easier to teach them to put their ears forward as a way to ask for a treat.
How you do this is to just wait the horse out; he can’t have the treat until at least one ear goes forward. Eventually, you can suggest a word to the horse, like “pretty ears” or whatever, and the horse learns what he needs to do to get the treat. You should be able to accomplish this in a week’s time but may take a month for the horse to be consistent.
2. On Companion Walking, sometimes it will help to stop and not go forward until the ears go forward. This might take a lot of time. You may just have to accept this from your horse.
3. This same behavior of the head tossing could very well be connected to your horse’s ear behavior. In a way, it could be a genetic reflex. Whether it is or isn’t, I find that when they are tossing their head as they are on a send-away, it will [...]</itunes:summary>

I appreciate that many people are willing to take the long journey to build a relationship with a horse as Robin and Carry have done with Pony.
In the traditional programs of leaning how to fix problems with horses, the problem gets fixed from an overall system and does not take in to consideration of the needs of the individual horse and human. Recently I watched a Youtube of a horse, he has a similar problem as Pony, not as bad, but still a problem of putting a bridle. The method just used force and persistence at the time the horse was fighting to get away.
I am working on my book and I just finished my prologue and what I wrote really pertains to the subject of how to approach really big problems such as with Cary’s experience with her horse. It requires not a formula but to know how to follow a code of conduct that brings about connections and solutions.
There is not a formula. What you are doing is communicating in a way that exhibits your intentions. You approach the horse by winning his trust and favour in a way that can be mind altering to him to enjoy the very act that intimated him.
You only interact with your horse in the moments the horse is at peace and does not in any way feel the human is taking away his power and freedom and well being.
It requires the willingness of the professional to work with the horse as well as the human and meet the individual requirements of both in the moment.
It requires a professional to give whole heartily of yourself and to make adjustments that the code of conduct keep you to.
It is not about approach and retreat, it is more than that. It is the knowing when to approach and when to retreat and that is driven by the universal code of personal boundaries that allow the bond to evolve. Approach and retreat sound so cold and manipulative to me. What is happening for Robin is that she is speaking to Pony through the language of connection and following a code that the horse can begin to trust and recognize as the way of the horse.
If you have a chance to watch Robin’s Youtubes they are really wonderful. I watch them all the time. I want to strongly encourage everyone to attend Robin’s clinic if possible. I have found her clinics to be fun, enjoyable, and life-enhancing! Robin has a great sense of humor that is not to be missed!
How I gain knowledge is by observation and being inspired by what I see. I do not look at anything which does not draw my interest. To feel the feelings of connection that exists in the moment, is where I receive my knowledge that brings the dance that I share with horses.
When I observe I do no not try to figure out anything I just enjoy and allow the experience to inspire me. When this happens a solution automatically presents itself. The most powerful evolution to my own knowledge even to this very day is remembering to allow time to pass with out effort. To know that the pause allows the evolution and the bond to grow on its own while seeking guidance from horses and learning more about the way of horses. I follow this path.
Well, we have another weekend coming up and another opportunity for a new horse and humans sightings.
Remember I would love to read your stories on your new horse human sightings!
Have a great weekend! May the “Non Force” be with you!
Carolyn
PS By the way, if you are a graduate of my 2009 or 2010 Insider Circle or In a Box programs, there are only 2 places remaining for the 10-day Clinic I am running at my ranch in December. <itunes:summary>Carey Sweet rescued “Pony” from the race track. He was to be euthanized. She had rescued other track horses before and welcomed him into her life. In spite of her best efforts, his head shyness and jumpy reactions to movements or being touched escalated over the 7 years she owned him. She left a breakaway halter on because she couldn’t take it off without him exploding. Even unclipping the lead rope would throw him into a panic. Whenever he was loose he was nearly impossible to catch unless he was ready to come in for dinner. The situation became increasingly worse, as she didn’t have enough information about how to help him past his fears. After he panicked and crushed her mother into the wall of the stall, breaking her leg, Carey felt desperate. A respected source referred her to Robin Gates who’s work is based on my Method.
After 2 hours of trying to connect with him, Robin advised Carey to have an experienced body worker visit Pony because of the injuries he had inflicted on himself in his outbursts and then bring him to her ranch.
The first days at the ranch were spent simply being with him in a large paddock. His meals were spent with Robin quietly nearby. He was aloof and distant, declining to even to allow her to approach to say hello. However, on the 4th day he became interested in leaving his hay to investigate the carrots and grain she offered that happened to be in a feed bag known as a morral that is placed on the horses head. If he advanced to investigate, the lowered bag came closer and he could reach in and get some goodies. If he showed fear, hesitancy or avoidance, even slightly, the bag moved further away. If he leaned or stepped forward, the bag came closer. As he became engrossed in the good experience, Robin gradually placed the strap over his ears. He began to consistently approach and seek the pleasure of having of the bag on his head. Over and over, Robin would put the bag on and then take it off. He decided that he really wanted it on his head and would follow her around in hopes that she would put it on. She also taught him to lower his head when she tapped his withers so he could receive a reward. Before placing a halter on or taking it off, she would tap his withers. He decided that he loved having things put on his head.
Robin helped Carey develop a new and trusting relationship with Pony using the Waterhole Ritual’s. He now happily approaches anyone who visits him and will offer his head for scratching. He has even allowed Robin to nibble on his ears!
This is a story I asked Robin to share regarding one of her latest successes in working with horses that are extremely fearful, not unlike what I am experiencing with Marylin here at my ranch. I think you will enjoy the accompanying Youtube regarding Pony.

I strongly suggest that you consider attending Robin’s next clinic on Sept. 4th and 5th. It is being held in Northern California in the town of Sebastopol located in Sonoma County. Contact Lisa Walters at 707 322-4955 to register.

For horses to survive in nature, they need to stay in a herd. What prevents horses from beating up on each other is the need to stay together for their safety, as well as the open spaces that they live in, which give them freedom to choose who stays in the herd, and who goes. If a horse is too self-serving and aggressive, the herd has the ability to banish them. Likewise, a horse can only join a herd when they show they can fit in harmoniously.
I have never cared for referring to the pecking order of horses. I prefer to call it picking order. One of the main reasons family bands get established is a stallion’s need to win the favor of a mare so that she will go off and form a new band with him. In the beginning of a relationship, as these bands are being formed, the stallion must put forth his best behavior. These groups or bands grow through horses’ respect and consideration for each other, and their need to develop a strong bond.
For a group to stay together, they must court each other on a daily basis. It is in the nature of horses to adjust their attitude through the bonding rituals. These adjustments take care of horses becoming too aggressive or self-serving. As the bond between individuals grows, there is always an adjustment of rude behavior that resurfaces from time to time in the relationships they share.
As you are going along with the Waterhole Rituals, resetting the respect and engaging in bonding interactions with your horse is essential for a deepening of the relationship.
In fact, horses enjoy the dynamic shifts that occur from these adjustments. If we think about it, in our own marriages and relationships, we have occasional breaks of “nice” and arguments, and that’s what gives spice to the relationship. It is what creates the bond to grow deeper and the magnetic connection to flourish, both in horses and humans.
So, don’t be disappointed when you need to make these adjustments. If you think about it, we like these adjustments within our own friendships. It’s what brings spice to a marriage, if we care more for the outcome to be heartfelt.
The weekend is here. I want to remind everyone to watch out for New Horse and Human Sightings. I had one, just last week: Apollo, my dog, ran up the hill and grabbed some sort of dead carcass. He usually will not give it up, and I have to pry his mouth open and also worry about getting bit, so he can keep his find. This time, as he was standing at least twenty feet away from me, I asked him to spit it out, and he did!
Also, don’t forget Robin’s clinic on September 4-5, in Sebastopol, CA, just north of San Francisco, very close to Santa Rosa.
