Squirrels doing tricks?!
Apr 30th, 2008 by Carolyn Resnick Method
Today, I would like to share a fun story with you about a training session that I had with a thoroughbred mare whom I have worked with for some time, called Rosalie; a very, very wonderful mare to work with.
Well actually, the story is not really about Rosalie, it’s about the ground squirrels that come around when Rosalie and I are training and I’m using treats. I use treats as part of my work with horses, not every session, but a lot of the time I work I do use them. I find that the horses learn faster that way and its makes it more enjoyable for the horse. It also helps to keep them polite, respectful and alert.

Isn’t this a wonderful illustration that when there is connection then all that is in the range of that connection frequency are connected?
It reminds me so much of the Jonathon Livingston Seagull story. Thank you Carolyn for this little gift!
And Shyan – you reminded me of my childhood – I had a pair of birds fly with me whenever I rode in South Africa. I had all but forgotten. In Namibia it was Meercats who came when I was out sitting watching a small herd of wild horses abandoned on a farm, one or two of them would run out into the veld accompanying me, stay near me and then accompany me back. I too just love that feeling of immersion into the beauty around. Thank you!
I too am glad I decided to come read all of Carolyn’s Blog entries! What shining gems they are in my natural horsemanship journey!
This story was SO telling!
When we give freely and unconditionally, nature gives back!
Carolyn and Shyan, both your stories are very interesting and touching. I felt it in my heart.
I am so glad I decided today to make the time to start from the beginning to read all of Carolyn’s articles!
That reminds me of when I was 14 and living in the mountains, every day at my bus stop I loved hearing the birds and watching every thing around me. I then noticed a very fat robin. He would fly in and out of the trees around me and have dirt bathes next to me, every day I noticed he would come closer and one day my little friend actually followed me home! Flying from tree to tree…
That is the funniest thing! That was one smart little guy; and people say animals are dumb!
thanks for sharing that!
