Let’s look at how the magnetic connection with your horse and your leadership role work together to bring about a magical performance at Liberty.

Let’s first look at the dance with your horse as a spontaneous one. A spontaneous dance is not a dance of predator and prey; it is not a dance of rivals; it is not a dance of a trained bear. A spontaneous liberty dance is a dance of meaningful friendship that is special between horse and human, where the horse is drawn to follow the leadership of his human partner.
A trained dance differs from a spontaneous dance in that the horse and human are more focused on the performance. The dance does not arise out of them from the magnetism they offer to one another. A spontaneous dance needs a clear leader that can follow and lead to be able to keep the dance alive. Like playing with a cat with a string, your role is to lead the cat by making the string come alive in a way that would attract the cat. The cat wants you to lead his dance and there must be a bond first for the cat to trust you enough … Read more

I’m sharing this in hopes to make a difference and shed some light on how horses think, reason and process. The reason I find that this is important is that in the training of horses, for centuries, there is an attitude not to let a horse get away with something. It is thought that if you allow them to get away with something that it will become a negative response that the horse will hold onto. This isn’t the case.
I have loved, lived and been with horses all of my life. The purpose was, and is, to look at them closely to get to know them deeply realizing that in my lifetime I will never completely figure them out. However, through my years of focus on this subject I have learned many things about them. My knowledge has separated me from the equine community in the standpoint of how to approach, train and bond with a horse.
I know this video isn’t very good because it was an “out-take”. The reason it is an out-take is that it didn’t fit with what I want my students to do with their horses. The thing that is important is that Honey … Read more

I want to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving Day.
I would also like to thank all of you for reading my blog and supporting me as you have.
I do not have a lot to say this time. I am busy getting ready for the December Clinic and my mother hurt her wrist and needs my help getting around right now. We thought it was broken, but it is likely a sprain and she is healing very fast. By the time the clinic gets here, she will be fine. If you have anything you want to share with me this holiday season, I would love to answer any questions on horses or would be happy to hear any stories you would like to share.
I do have a message though for today
We have several people who are sending in videos to get qualified for the Bitless Dressage Course that have not yet taken a course on the Waterhole Rituals with me. This is a prerequisite that I forgot to mention. I apologize for not stating this earlier. I am not just teaching how to ride bitless as a way to avoid a bit, but my course is about developing … Read more

Here it is what I promised you, the first of the free lessons in how to train a horse for bit-less Dressage.
I chose Honey as the horse to use to show the steps in making a bit-less horse. He is naturally heavy to the aids for he had no breaks and was unwilling to take direction. I think much more is gained in seeing the method being used on a horse that needs training rather than a horse that already knows the method.

Honey is a Morgan Arabian cross and he came to me with some behavior problems under saddle, so I am starting over with him. The problem that people were experiencing was that Honey wanted to be in a hurry when being ridden and if you tried to slow him down, he would rear. Many times Honey would rear for no apparent reason or just because you were on his back. He was a horse with a great big “NO” attitude. However, I saw something in him that was greater than the “NO” he was putting forth towards humans.
I saw a look in his eyes that drew me to him. He appeared to have a great … Read more

My Dream “Spanish Riding School” -
The school will be open to everyone interested in my method by offering tours and an opportunity for an hour’s lesson in horse training. This school will accommodate short programs of horse training and Sharing Territory with horses all the way up to programs of learning that would extend out to a lifetime student program. The school’s purpose is to create excellent horsemen and horsewomen through training horses at Liberty; where the horse has free will to learn, dance or even to stay in the pasture and graze in a family herd environment, if that is what the horse would prefer to do. The focus of the school will be to learn herd behavior as it relates to understanding the individual horse and the society that is natural to horses.
The Environment -
The format of the training program is set up as a group environment for both students and horses. Teams of students will work together training one horse as well as working with several horses at the same time. This style of education offers a togetherness that is natural to horses and nurturing to humans. This way people learn how to … Read more

The weekend is over and I had a new horse sighting that I am so excited to share with you! We have a new horse here on the ranch that is difficult to bridle. He is a dressage horse and will do most anything to get out of having to put a bridle on. He hates the bridle – but still every time he winds up losing and performing against his better judgment and wishes.
So Sad. It reminds me of when I was five years old and taking lessons in dance. My mother drove me 20 miles each way to where the dance studio was. My teacher was an old man that always spoke mean to me and hit me with his cane if I did not dance exactly how I was to perform. The ride to the studio was always miserable, and I dreaded going to what I knew would be an awful experience. The funny thing was, no one could tell that I was unhappy about the experience because I looked happy out on the dance floor. The knots in my stomach did not match the joy that I appeared to be experiencing.
I know this horse … Read more
