Tales from the mountains – part 1

Hello and a happy 4th of July to you!

I am delighted to announce the first in what we hope will be a series of stories from Margaret who featured on the post Being in nature. We have been exchanging messages with each other and I asked her if she wouldn’t mind sharing some of her journey with us as she gets to know her mare, Amber, in the 230 acres they and 30 other horses share up there in the mountains in northern California. Margaret seems to experience the same joy as I do from the simple pleasures to be found in nature and her stories bring a smile to my heart, I hope they do to yours too.

Have a super weekend and I look forward to talking with you again next week.

Liberty Training

Welcome! I hoped you liked the photo’s on Wednesday, weren’t they cute? Today I have another surprise for you and for me too actually. The video below is from a new DVD of mine called “Liberty Training”. Well, I say new but in reality it was shot about 20 years ago on the ranch I had in Sonoma.

It’s really quite amazing to look at it now and see how much my Method has developed over the years but at the same time how the fundamentals have not.

Try a little tenderness….

Hello, hope you all had a lovely weekend.

The story that I would like to share with you today is something that happened to me a couple of weeks ago when we were doing some filming. We were working on my new DVD that we are going to be bringing out showing the different personalities of horses and how each personality responds to the Waterhole Rituals.

We had a horse here that is known as a fearful shy horse and we needed to have one like that to not only show his experience with the Rituals but to show people what a fearful horse looks like.

A mare and her foal

I get so many wonderful questions from so many lovely people and so it’s such a pleasure to be able to share them with you.

I sincerely hope you enjoy reading my blog and that the lessons are of practical use to you. If you have faced similar challenges and found my advice useful, then do please share your story with us, we’d love to hear it.

This question comes from Victoria, who is a regular contributor and has her own blog here.

The Path of the Horse

Hi. Today I have a very special video for you that was made by my friend, Stormy May. Stormy is (of course) a horse lover and has been making DVDs on horses for a number of years and has in fact made my last 2 DVDs, Panadero’s Journey and Introduction to the Waterhole Rituals.

The video you will see is a trailer for a documentary she is making called The Path of the Horse, which is about the future of horse-human relationships. The film focuses on 5 people Stormy has interviewed who she believes have a very special and natural relationship with their horses: Alexander Nevzorov, Klaus Hempfling, Linda Kohanov, Mark Rashid and, I’m proud to say, me.

Bossy horse!

Hello again. Today’s question comes from Melissa in Indiana and is typical of ones like this that I receive on a regular basis. Her situation involves a horse that is just too bossy! Perhaps this sounds familiar to you too? Melissa writes:

I have a 4.5 year old gelding quarter mix I’ve had since he was 7 months old. He has had 45 days professional (natural horsemanship) training and that’s been almost 2 years ago. I know that’s not much and I’m at fault for him being so pushy because I do not put enough time in saddle!

Introduction to the Waterhole Rituals

Hi again. Today’s post features an excerpt from my latest DVD, Introduction to the Waterhole Rituals. The DVD looks at all 7 of my Rituals and is a really good starting point for those who have not yet come across my work.

Later in the year, I will be releasing a 3 DVD series that will go into greater depth on the Waterhole Rituals and will look at the different ways to handle different types of horse. Each horse is unique and each horse needs to be approached as an individual.
