What approach do you use with your horse when leading with a halter and rope?
Have you ever thought about how the influence of tack affects your relationship with your horse? When using tack, many times a person will catch their horse as quickly as possible with no thought to rekindling the friendship and the horse’s desire to stick to you and follow your lead. A reason that this can happen is from thinking that the halter and rope will create the connection you need with your horse.

Tack can create sloppy connections with your horse. Think about it: If you took off the halter would you still be able to lead your horse and keep him at your side? If you can, it came from your attention to the relationship and the bond minutes before you put it on. What would your horse do if you took off his halter? Most likely you would no longer be able to lead your horse anywhere. But, if you have worked your horse at Liberty first without tack to gain the Magnetic Connection in Companion Walking, using tack would be a benefit rather than a device that enslaves the… Read more

Leadership with horses is so easy.
They are herd animals. It is natural for horses to lead and to follow. But when we begin to train they can seem to be resistant to the whole idea of us taking a leadership role with them. Often this response is because the person training the horse is resistant to having to take on the role as leader. What I hope to do in this blog is to influence the reader to see that training and shaping behavior through leadership at liberty is an enjoyable endeavor.

Making a Good Relationship Great.
When a horse shows resistance to our leadership it is usually caused from not pushing hard enough, pushing too hard, or we are offering a program that is not appropriate for the horse in the moment. Since good relationships are developed though trial and error this back and forth is desirable because it exposes the true path we need to take with our horse to gain unity and harmony through leadership.

Announcement: Please check back to Tuesday’s blog on the Uberstreichen Class, we have new videos posted.
The conference call was wonderful because of our group and the interesting questions asked. It is so uplifting to be heard and appreciated! Thank you all for your contributions to the call! I am more and more aware that I am making a difference for the horse getting a better deal, and helping the cause of finding other uses of horses from the connection we share with them. They have so much to offer mankind in our evolution, well-being, and life enrichment that they bring to us. We need to take care of the horses we have produced- it is our moral responsibility, and it is important to man’s own salvation. The mind set that would take care of a horse after its practical need for labor and transportation and entertainment is a mind that will help to form peace on the planet.
The Question
Someone on the call asked a question about her trainer who felt that her riding was setting her horse’s training back, and she wanted to know if this is possible. I want to add more to my answer to… Read more

Cavalia Show Highlights
Cavalia is back again in Southern California, this time in Burbank. Normand Latourelle, one of the founders of Canada’s famed Cirque du Soleil, created the grand spectacular between horses and humans we know as “Cavalia.” The first year Cavalia came to California was in 2004. One of the most amazing things about the production is the sheer size and scale of it! Cavalia is held under the largest touring big top in North America reaching a height of 100 feet with a stage that is 160 feet wide! This allows the horses enough space to gallop and play with the artists at times free, unfettered by bridles or halters, my kind of show!
The first time Cavalia came to Southern California, I went only once, because that is the way people usually do it, just attending one performance once a season. The next time I couldn’t help attending the show three times- especially because Cavalia doesn’t come ever year, and there is no guarantee that they will return. I thought I was probably in the minority going back to see three shows in the same season. Few people are as horse crazy as I am!… Read more

Second Annual Free Course, Winter 2011
Welcome to week 5!
What we have accomplished up to this point is that your horse can stand on a dropped line or without a line, and will stay in place while you walk around him to the right. (This is the beginning of you horse learning to stay in tune with you without governing his performance. You are creating a horse to be more responsible and in self control. For a horse to do well in self-carriage, your horse will need the desire to follow your request, and then carry out what you ask of him without your constant direction.)
What we have also accomplished now is that your horse will allow you to take a floating hold, and that your horse will drop his head down at any lower level you ask for. (It is important that your horse is willing to put his head in a lower frame anywhere you request it to go, and hold it there in a natural way.)
So far in this exercise you are getting the horse to unlock the base of the neck where the neck ties into the shoulders. You are not yet… Read more

Second Annual Free Course, Winter 2011
Welcome to week 2! It looks like we have a very full classroom!
I’d like to continue writing on the subject of theory and the Uberstreichen Exercises a little bit more before I give you the first exercise. I would like to add and revisit some finer points as well.
Some Additional Benefits of the Uberstreichen Exercises:
1. I developed the Uberstreichen Exercises to help me in my training center in order to develop a horse that would work well for others in collection, presentation, and the attitude of the horse.
2. I also developed the Uberstreichen Exercises so that when the horse went home, the training and connection would stick for the owner.
3. When a horse got excited and fearful at the shows I could return his focus easily to feeling secure and relaxed.
Some Surprise Benefits are:
4. I could return an out of control stallion in a new environment around mares and other stallions to relax and return his focus back to me. In those days I had 5 stallions at the time I was developing the Uberstreichen Exercises, and accidentally found out how brilliantly they helped me in
