WORKING WITH THE WATERHOLE RITUALS: RULES AND GUIDELINES
As we go along, you will learn many ways in which your approach can affect the relationship you share with a horse. The rules of your behavior will change according to whether your horse approaches you, or you approach your horse.
The rules for working at liberty to bring about a true instinct in a horse to want to bond and stay with you are:
- If the horse does not like the direction that he is given, he goes away, signaling you to stop your interactio
- To reconnect, you must seek permission to enter the horse’s personal space through the Hello Ceremony.
- If the horse objects by walking or running away from you, you must then go away, giving the horse time to naturally choose to reconnect.
- When you direct a horse when you are in his personal space, it should always be a request, and if he doesn’t respond to it, you drop the subject and walk away.
- If a horse walks up to you and steps into your personal space you can be more assertive
- If you are too assertive, your horse will leave you and you

Hello. Today I have a story for you about the power of patience, persistence and also respect, which I hope you will find very revealing.
I was once asked to work with a well-bred warm blood mare who was extremely dangerous to be around. She would charge open-mouthed, intending to bite hard, at whoever came into her space.
She was in her stall-sized pipe corral when I arrived. I spent some time nearby and then approached her to say hello. The mare charged at me, fully intending to bite. I jumped back out of her reach and personal space and waited for her to process what had just happened.
After she settled down, I approached her again. Again the mare charged at me, prepared to bite. Again I retreated, and waited for her to settle.
We repeated this sequence what felt like 50 or 60 times … so many that I lost count. Again I began my approach, and this time the mare let me come right up to her. She breathed on my outstretched hand and allowed me to gently stroke her face. After that, she never again attempted to charge and bite anyone.
This story illustrates the… Read more

Hi and thank you for all your lovely stories, photo’s and videos from Tuesday about working with my Method. Sorry if I haven’t replied to you yet, I will try and get to you.
It is only natural when we learn something new to have many questions and I know how frustrating it is not to have these answered. As you start to work with the Waterhole Rituals therefore, I really want to support you and so I am thinking of putting together a program that will enable me to walk you through the Rituals and then answer any questions you may have as you go along. We’re still looking into this at the moment but if you have any questions that I haven’t answered or any suggestions as to how this would work best for you, then please email Mark at info@carolynresnick.com.
The other day I was asked how my Method fits in with Natural Horsemanship and afterwards I thought the question would make for an interesting blog post. So this is the written up and expanded version of my answer.
In the initial relationship, rather than training a horse, my desire… Read more

Hello. Before I get on to today’s post, I am delighted to announce that my book Naked Liberty is now available on CD. For those of you who are technically challenged, like me, this will probably come as a great relief! The book is read by my good friend, Liz Mitten Ryan, and she has done a wonderful job of bringing my childhood experiences to life. You can get it by clicking here, Naked Liberty on CD. I hope you enjoy it.
Today, I want to address a problem that people are having sending a horse away from them at liberty. Many people have expressed concern that driving a horse away from them will hurt the trust and bond. I can understand this point of view because of the struggle it might take in their mind to teach a horse to leave you when he does not want to go.

I’ve often been asked whether wild and domestic horses are the same or different from one another. Here’s my take on it
Gifted animal communicators who work with wild animals are focused on making the same connection and follow the same rules of communication that my Waterhole Rituals are focused on. Your connection and leadership with the Waterhole Rituals are on the animals’ terms and not on your own because of the mood and the ability to control the relationship. One minute you can have a connection and the next you do not. In fact it is easier to read a wild animals shift in attitude than with a domestic horse.
