A Day At Dances with Horses: Meeting Stoli

A lot happens in small increments. This is where magic is grown.

At the Ranch today we were acclimatizing a horse by the name of Stoli to the ranch and developing a bond with him using the first Waterhole Ritual™. He is a 21 year old ex racehorse that is a schoolmaster in lower level dressage. He is quite nicely trained, very health and moves around like a young horse. He has a problem though of being quite barn sour and does not really enjoy peoples company but he does like his dressage work. He likes to kick other horses and has made a deep bond with his next door neighbor. He has been on the ranch for over a week and is taking his time in wanting to connect with us.

I have leased him from a friend for my apprentice Julia Felton who is with me for a period of three months. She is here to learn my method and study dressage training and riding. Our trade is that she his helping me to finish my book as well as helping me with my daily responsibilities. In return, I am coaching her on the Waterhole Rituals™ and giving… Read more

Hi again. Before I get on to today’s post, I ‘d like to tell you about a special event that’s taking place at my ranch on Saturday October 4th.

If you own an ex-racehorse or are planning to purchase one… come and join horse racing hall-of-famer and Parelli student Julie Krone, race horse trainer Jack Frazier, ex amateur jockey Alessandra Deerinck DVM and myself for an open discussion about how we can all help racehorses make the transition from the racetrack to a second career.

You will also be able to see Alessandra work with her horse Rosalie, aka ex-racehorse Downtown Rosalie, and watch their progress towards bridleless riding and dressage using my Method.

Hello. Today I would like to conclude my thoughts on how we can help racehorses by looking to the future.

The strong permanent change we can make is to guide children to be compassionate and caretakers of horses. A great way to start with children is to ask them what does the horse’s world look like when humans are supportive to their needs? Go to schools and ask this question. Remember, ask and it is given!!! This is something I have done in the past and you might consider to facilitate change.

Hi. I’d like to continue today with my thoughts on racehorses and how we can help them.

One big problem I see is how to get people to give up a lifestyle of joy and celebration around the love of horseracing when its history is full of legends, heroes and greats. There are many honourable traditions of horseracing and many families live these traditions, worship famous trainers, jockeys and horses that love to run like Eight Belles.

Let’s not forget about the money, personal self worth, joy and drama that surround the racing industry. It seems like a mammoth undertaking to try and change it, doesn’t it? Much like riding a horse towards a jump that you know you can’t make and on the other side is the unknown… could be it’s an eight-foot drop ending in a hopeless crash. It’s pretty scary and maybe the smart thing would be to stop trying. But you can’t do that either because of the anger, guilt and gnawing in your stomach.

Hi again. Today’s blog post is once more on the horse racing industry and I was moved to write it in response to the very positive comments we received to the last post on the subject and also because I received an email from Dawn Mellen.

Dawn is busy organizing her first fundraiser for her newly formed foundation After The Finish Line, a funding non-profit to rescue thoroughbred racehorses from the track. Dawn’s foundation aims to give racehorses the chance of a second career rather than go to slaughter. We have posted the invite below, so I hope you can go to the event as I intend to or donate a silent auction item or just send money. If you’d like to contact Dawn, her details are beneath the invite.

The Abuse of Living Like Kings

Recently I heard of the unfortunate tragic end of the life and career of Eight Belles. I was struck by the comments of several people interviewed about the event and I realized that I felt absolute outrage at some of these comments.

First, I remember the reporter asking a gentleman about the race and the ethics of horse racing. He said that horses “love racing” and “she (Eight Belles) especially would have given her life to be able to race”. He went on to say that the horses at the track were “treated like Kings and had a great life thanks to the racing industry.”
