I have several horses here at my ranch that I am working with on issues of behavior. Some that have been here a long time are now the salt of the earth, and others have just started their journey to be retrained or rehabilitated from improper and abusive approaches. Today I worked with an Arabian stallion that is three going on four. When he began with me, he was a horse that would bite, kick, strike, and rear. He would use these on you if asked to do simple things like leading or grooming or working around him closely at liberty. The fact of the matter is that this horse is really a very simple horse with no desire to be dominant even though he acted that way. At this point in his life, his hormones are not causing any issues. His nature is to do what he is told and to like people and other horses. So how did all of this happen and how did he become so out of control?

It was easy. Even though his owner/ handler/ trainer was gifted with horses, she did not lay a foundation with her stallion. Instead of building the foundations… Read more

Picasso, the Friesian-Lipizzan gelding

Hello again. Thank you so much for all your wonderful comments about my plans for a school. Of course, its early days and we need to find the funding to make it all happen but your kind words are very encouraging.

Today, I want to share a story with you that was sent in by Katie from northern California. Katie’s story just shows what can be done if you just go out and follow what’s in my book and in my DVD’s. You will see how much and how fast her relationship with her horse, Picasso, changed just by doing these simple Rituals. She also has a similar success with a couple of wild paint colts she was hired to gentle.

Treats at Christmas!

Hello again. Today I would like to talk a little more about treats as it’s one area that seems to cause a lot of people a lot of confusion. When people are having difficulties with using treats, it is always because they haven’t put in place the right foundations.

Treats work for me because I set a strong bond without treats first and then I develop respect with a horse using treats. In formative training, I do not carry treats on me because it helps to keep the horse’s attention on my direction instead of begging. In short, a horse will then perform what I ask without wanting a treat when I don’t carry them with me. A horse will learn respect quickly if you put food on the ground, explain to him that the food is not his and that he needs to look for your direction when he is allowed to eat and when he isn’t, just like a nursing foal. By not having the treats on me, I notice the horse thinking more about his performance and trying to figure out what it is that I am asking him to accomplish and he loses interest in… Read more

Fearful and aggresive horse

Hi again. Today’s post is another question, which I think many of you might find interesting and valuable. It concerns an arab mare that is alternately fearful and aggressive and is generally uneasy around other horses. Tami writes:

Hello

I have really enjoyed reading through your posts about making learning fun for horses. I took your quiz and the question on keeping her attention no matter what stood out to me. I wonder if you have any techniques or any reading material you would recommend for this issue:

I have a lovely 17 year old arab mare who I acquired as a green-broke 10 year old and have spent lots of time working with over the last 7 years. She is very bonded to me and when I moved the east coast and then up to Canada from San Diego a few years ago she came with me. She lived most of her life very happily on a farm where each horse stayed in an individual paddock and only socialized over fences.
