Blog Talk Radio

Hello again. Earlier in the year, I was on the online radio show Animal Talk Naturally, which is broadcast on Blog Talk Radio. The show is hosted by veterinary naturopaths, Dr. Kim Bloomer and Dr. Jeannie Thomason and I was fortunate also to appear alongside my good friend Liz Mitten Ryan. It was a very interesting show and the conversation was far-ranging as you will hear from the clip below. I spoke about such topics as leadership, getting a volunteered performance from your horse, having fun, treats, relationships and gaining a horse´s desire and intellectual understanding when performing.

It was highly enjoyable and the show is doing a lot to promote not only the natural treatment of horses but other animals too, so please support them and take a listen sometime.

Tales from the mountains – part 1

Hello and a happy 4th of July to you!

I am delighted to announce the first in what we hope will be a series of stories from Margaret who featured on the post Being in nature. We have been exchanging messages with each other and I asked her if she wouldn’t mind sharing some of her journey with us as she gets to know her mare, Amber, in the 230 acres they and 30 other horses share up there in the mountains in northern California. Margaret seems to experience the same joy as I do from the simple pleasures to be found in nature and her stories bring a smile to my heart, I hope they do to yours too.

Have a super weekend and I look forward to talking with you again next week.

Clicker training and treats

Hi. Someone asked me recently about clicker training and what I thought of it. Well, the fact of the matter is, I do not use clicker training.

I am not about tricks and performance as much as I am about preparing a horse to accept training. Equally important to me are relationship bonding and connection with my horse. My focus is to shape a horse’s character to be interested in learning and performing.

Squirrels doing tricks?!

Today, I would like to share a fun story with you about a training session that I had with a thoroughbred mare whom I have worked with for some time, called Rosalie; a very, very wonderful mare to work with.

Well actually, the story is not really about Rosalie, it’s about the ground squirrels that come around when Rosalie and I are training and I’m using treats. I use treats as part of my work with horses, not every session, but a lot of the time I work I do use them. I find that the horses learn faster that way and its makes it more enjoyable for the horse. It also helps to keep them polite, respectful and alert.
