This week’s post is from guest blogger Kai Mattern.
From riding waves to riding horses
Sports like white water kayaking, surfing and windsurfing took up the bulk of my life, sports that teach you to work together with nature rather than against it and the occasional encounters I had with horses and their riders didn’t match the pictures I had in my mind.

My background with horses
One day I went for a ride on a dude string which is another funny story I might tell in another occasion, either way it led to me taking riding lessons and some months later to my decision to get my own horse. I bought Oli when he was around 9, he was an extreme horse, a thoroughbred off the track with plenty of go but no whoa. Researching horse training on the internet, I found lots of information on natural horsemanship and for sure this was the path I wanted to be on. One method I tried, was round… Read more

Happy New Year to you and to all the connections we share! I want to thank you for being in my life. I wish everyone around the world abundance, deeper connections, health and happiness that multiplies around the world like the abundance of nature in spring.
New Year Wishes
My wish for the new year is for an apprentice or two who have a solid background in training horses that would stay for a long time to learn all aspects my method (Waterhole Rituals, Uberstreichen Exercises, Single Lining, dressage training and bridle-less riding) who could represent my method as I would like it to be. In exchange, I would like you to help me with educational material, office work, emails and bookings or your own unique skills (video, marketing, ???…). Thank you for all the greetings you left me on my blog. There is been no one in the office during the holidays but me. I was not able to respond to your comments because something in the system that was blocking my response. However I do want you to know, I read them all and I’m back to being able to write.

When working with the nature of horses you do not need to “get it done” to advance your horse’s training. Evolution will do it for you. Nature is always working for us if we can be in tune with it.
Removing the Focus on Force
The celebrated method of horse training in this country is based on making the thing you want the horse to do easy and the thing you do not want him to do hard. This method does not taking advantage of the evolution of a symbiotic bond and connection between horses and humans in the training of the horse.
In this method, a horse cannot get out of the “bind” the trainer creates until the desired result is obtained. This approach does not take the time to shape the horse’s behavior to have a desire to do something, that at first, he would not what to do. If the horse is allowed to stop his lesson and guide his human partner towards a fair and equitable relationship, the horse is shown more respect and this is the way we would all want to be treated.
To persist and force that a horse must do what he… Read more

Leadership with horses is so easy.
They are herd animals. It is natural for horses to lead and to follow. But when we begin to train they can seem to be resistant to the whole idea of us taking a leadership role with them. Often this response is because the person training the horse is resistant to having to take on the role as leader. What I hope to do in this blog is to influence the reader to see that training and shaping behavior through leadership at liberty is an enjoyable endeavor.

Making a Good Relationship Great.
When a horse shows resistance to our leadership it is usually caused from not pushing hard enough, pushing too hard, or we are offering a program that is not appropriate for the horse in the moment. Since good relationships are developed though trial and error this back and forth is desirable because it exposes the true path we need to take with our horse to gain unity and harmony through leadership.

The purpose of the Insider Circle and Extended Circle online courses is to develop a cross species bond that creates your horses’ interest to follow your lead, learn new behaviors, and have an optimistic attitude when you go to ride your horse. This special bond will remove resistance, bad attitude, and unwanted behaviors like bolting, biting, kicking, shying, and running away.
Learning To Develop Positive Attitudes…Not One, But Five!
Once you have this cross species bond when you ride, it will be an enjoyable experience for you both. Your horse will be willing to follow your lead and have a sense of well being because of the trust and respect he has for you. How you create this magical relationship is by developing five positive attitudes in your horse and in yourself. These attitudes are to have a deep bond, trust, respect, willingness, and attention on each other. The connection you create from these attitudes will give you a perfect dancing partner. Having these attitudes your horse will be able to read your mind and understand your communication that is going to surprise you. Learn how to shape the energy of the horse to be appropriate in the moment in the interactions you share.
People are talking about Robin Gates and her amazing dancing horses and her amazing clinics. I want to announce that Robin is getting ready for another clinic on September 3rd and 4th 2011 in Sebastopol, California.
Attending Robin’s clinic you will get the opportunity to experience breathtaking interactions with horses at liberty. You will learn how horses in nature develop their bonds and ability to flow together in a dance of unity and harmony right in front of your eyes by watching Robin working at liberty. Robin will explain in detail what is occurring in the horse’s mind so that you may approach your horse in a way that will bring out willingness, cooperation, and trust. The dynamics are the most important part in how to build a working partnership with a horse at liberty and this is what she will be sharing with you.
Robin leaves nothing out, and offers plenty of action. She does this in a humorous and entertaining way that makes complete sense. If you do… Read more
